Teaching Taught Him To Live

The success story of V.K. Bansal (Now Bansal Sir ) seems something like miracle. A will to survive made him a teacher. And his Courage, Determination and Vision changed the course of fate & gave him a new lease of life. He has learnt to live through teaching.

Many people know that the Bansal Classes is run by an engineer, V.K.Bansal who had been working in J.K.Synthetics Ltd. Kota, from 1971 to 1991 and he teaches students for IIT JEE.

Results of his students are so encouraging that students from all over India and neighboring countries are approaching him. But few people know about the man who turned to be a silent teacher quitting his engineering profession. The success of his institute is the success of a man, who is handicap by both his legs. Life of Mr. Bansal had been full of ups & downs. It had been bright & cheerful till his age of 25 years but in 1975 he developed with a physical disease-incurable muscular dystrophy. It was shocking when his efforts to get treatment of the disease at AIIMS and many other hospitals in the country failed. He consulted Ayurvedic, Natural therapists and consulted doctors in UK but, no hope.

He became disturbed and life was full of disappointments. It was a great misfortune. While serving in J.K.s, as a mechanical engineer, he continued his search to come out of his misfortunes.

In such a situation an advice by communication from a doctor of London, proved to be a boon for Mr. Bansal. The doctor had advised him to turn to teaching and forget about the disease that had griped him. It clicked and Mr. Bansal says, "I had a sort of sensation in my mind while reading the letter from the doctor and felt this could be the cure of my disease. "

He was not sure whether he could teach engineering or others students but in 1981 he started tutions, not for money but for change. The beginning was made with a 7th class student while residing in J.K. Nagar, Kota.

Mr. Bansal Devoted himself to study and in teaching students in such a way that he left no time spare to think of his disability, 8 hours working in the factory at J.K., 6 hours every day study, then teaching at home and, thus time, went on from 1981 to 1991.

During this period of Ten years, he taught 10th,, 11th classes, PET & IIT Entrance students. A confidence began to develop in him in 1984 when he gave coaching to PET students at National Coaching Institute situated at Kota Junction.

His first student to be selected for IIT/ROORKIE was Anoop Kothari. It was in 1985. The number of students selected for IIT after getting his coaching went on increasing from 1986 to till date gradually.

This built his confidence further. The number of students cleared the IIT entrance in 1986 from his coaching classes was 3, it was 10 in 1990. He took voluntary retirement from J.K.Synthetics, Kota in 1991 and fully devoted himself to "Bansal Classes". The number 10 rose to 209 in 1999. It had been out of 420 students which is a limit now. In 1999, 10 students were in the top 100 all India rank. Total 700 students from his classes have been selected till 1999 for IIT and many for Roorkie and PET.

He had a new building constructed near his house for coaching classes. It runs from 9 in the morning till 9 in the night. Personal attention and care by teaching students in groups of 15 and managing everything with dedication, devotion and hard work, could be the secret of his success.

Born in Jhansi on 26th October 1949. Mr. Bansal had his schooling in Lucknow, graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Banaras Hindu University with Honours in 1971, began his career as a Mechanical Engineer. He has two daughters and one son.

His wife, he feels, had been a great help to him during the period of great sufferings mental and physically both. He feels that he is able to survive and could challenge the forecast of the doctors because of his relations and interaction with the students. It may be the "good wishes of his students", as he thinks.

The change in profession gradually, "enabled me to not to think too much of illness. I had great satisfaction from my job. I have been getting appreciation. This makes me feel high about myself and I get relief. I continue to try to become an ideal teacher. I always think of what I can do and try to forget what I cant ". His life is regular and full of work. " I dont know how the time goes on and how and when the day turns in to night and so on," Says Mr. Bansal.
